Call for Cooperators:
Participatory Research in Forested Communities in Appalachia
The Appalachian Forest Resource Center is interested in supporting community groups working on projects that will improve their communities, forests, and/or management of those forests.
We will support participatory research by groups in the Central and Southern Appalachians that are doing such community projects. This includes Appalachian regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and Maryland. For a map consult our web site
www.appalachianforest.org/maps/
By "participatory research" we mean projects that:
-
Are part of a community or group project
-
Answer a question that is important to the group
-
Involve members of the group in finding information to answer that question
AFRC can supply limited funding and technical assistance on a variety of issues. We have a small pool of funds for project activities and an additional pool for technical assistance.
Participatory research activities can be part of a larger effort but the AFRC support is specifically for the designated participatory research and related activities.
All participatory research projects should generally be completed within 12 months. The start-date will be during the Summer of 2004.
Selected groups will be asked to develop a work plan and will be required to submit quarterly reports. Funds will be disbursed in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding between AFRC and each cooperator.
